Testimonials

"I have been having lessons with Matt for 10 months. I can not believe how much I've learnt and how my playing has improved in such a short period of time. I started playing the alto sax at school but didn't really receive great tuition, so I didn't get too far and eventually gave up!

What a difference then and now, since starting with Matt my enthusiasm has returned, not just for the sax but for music theory as well, which as a kid the importance of theory was never really explained. My goal is to learn to improvise around a tune and actually learn to play the sax not just be able to play a tune! Which with Matt's teaching is happening.

I am an adult pupil and finding time to practice can be a challenge, Matt is very patient and structures the lessons to fit my progress. I really would recommend Matt to others trying to take the sax up again or a complete beginner. I recently went to watch Matt at his recital, his playing is incredible and it is a pleasure to have lessons from someone so enthusiastic and talented!"

"Having been a self taught guitarist of 12 years I'd always had an itch to give the saxophone a go. I started speaking to Matt to see what would be involved. He helped through the process of finding a sax before I even started a lesson and always had time for me.

Matt's technical knowledge, passion for nailing the fundamentals and fair honest critiquing make him an excellent teacher.

Unfortunately I've had to put the sax on hold with the arrival of twins, but in a short time Matt had drastically improved my tone and technique. The biggest compliment is that I applied what I was learning to guitar as well and my playing improved out of sight.

I'll definitely be seeing Matt again in the future and would recommend him to anyone wanting to learn or get better at the sax."

"I began playing alto saxophone as a second instrument and taught myself for 6 years. I was never able to access a specialist saxophone teacher until 2016. I live about 300km away from Adelaide.

I got in touch with Matt at the start 2016 and asked if he could tutor a student without having weekly lessons. Throughout the year, Matt was able to accommodate my irregular visits to Adelaide with extended lessons, which made valuable use of the time that we had together. He helped me to prepare for my university auditions by introducing me to the techniques used in jazz. I had always loved to play jazz but had no idea how to do it properly. With the limited lessons that we were able to have, Matt made me feel confident to audition. He taught me the theory at a good pace and wrote everything out for me to look at later. He taught me how to practice and to set out my schedule to fit in everything that I need to look at during my time without him.

I would recommend Matt to any student looking for tuition at this level."

"Our son took saxophone lessons for three years before we found Matt Oulton. We regret that we did not find him sooner. Under his instruction, my son is not only able to play challenging pieces, but his technical skills have improved greatly. The past two years with Matt have been truly rewarding. Matt has worked with him on different styles, prepared him for exams and auditions, and jammed with him forgetting that the lesson time was over…

Matt is an excellent teacher with highly professional performing skills, comprehensive knowledge of music, and a wonderful personality. He has the rare ability to inspire students – this most likely happens due to his enthusiasm and enjoyment of playing.

I would highly recommend Matt to any student regardless of his/her level of skill."

"Matt Oulton is a wonderful teacher. I started with him two years ago as an “advanced beginner”, and with his help, my technique and the difficulty level of pieces I can play has dramatically improved.

He is a teacher with a lot of patience and a deep love of music. He teaches not only what to practice, but more importantly how to practice. I always look forward to the next lesson with Matt, because of the fun factor!"

"Matt has been teaching my 11 year old son since December 2015 after he has been learning at school and he has improved massively. His tone and sense of rhythm is developing really well and he looks forward to the lessons each week and loves practicing in preparation for his next lesson."
